 ENVISIONING A BETTER ATHENS

"Envisioning a better Athens" is the biggest accomplishment of my journalistic career. I remember a year prior to this article I vowed that I would never write a feature story. And in some ways I was right, because I wrote a stylized and Gonzo-esque article. It took a lot of revision to end up with a product that I was happy with. I interviewed Ed Moore several times and visited the shelter twice at 6:00 a.m.

 YOBO MUY FRESCO

 NOLA's PIANO PRINCE

It was challenging penning my article on YoBo Cantina. After visiting the restaurant several times, my opinion on the fare was largely ambivalent and it’s hard to write about mediocrity. I relied on detailed descriptions of standout (some good, some bad) dishes to add interest to the article

I wrote this article that I’ve written in the eleventh hour of production. I was assigned the article on a long Saturday workday and I had to watch the movie, interview the filmmaker and write a draft all in a day.  "New Orleans’ own piano prince" was needed for the issue to be sent off. While writing this article, I had to be mindful of the social and political issues at play in the documentary.

 CATCHING THE GHPHEELS

"Catching the GHPheels" was my first Letter From the Editor. It was published as part of a multimedia package I compiled, including a video, news piece and video. It was really fun piece to write because I just let go and really put my "GHPheelings" into the editorial.

 SLEIGH BELLS COME IN JINGLING

"Sleigh Bells come in jingling" is my favorite review that I've written for the ODYSSEY Media Group. It was an exciting challenge to review a concert opposed to something static like an album or movie. I had to research the band's latest album and take notes on their performance, their setlist as well as the atmosphere of the event.

 BREAKING BREAD

This article was my comeback piece. It was the first thing I wrote my sophomore year and the piece really made me a journalist. I had to do a lot of fishing for my sources for this story. I contacted several different people to get in touch with the owner of the bakery. I then went with a few videographers and interviewed the owner and a couple customers at the shop. Breaking bread was my first award winning article, it was rated a Superior News Story by GSPA.

 ADDRESSING THE CODE

After Clarke Central High School’s administration cracked down on dress code violations, a group of irked students plastered posters in protest of the policy. Once I interviewed an administrator and read all of the posters, I was able to form an opinion on the issue and to write an editorial on it.

 A CULINARY FUMBLE

My review of Herschel’s 34 Pub and Grill was the first thing that I wrote that was published in the magazine. I had to eat at the restaurant four times before I could write an informed review. This article taught me how to self-edit. My first draft was searingly mean and too harsh for a local business. I had to reread my article and determine what was overkill and what was accurate.
