 REDESIGN IDEAS

At the end of my junior year–after frustrated with the lack of aesthetic wiggle room I had as the editor of the Viewpoints section–I submitted a redesign of key layouts. I decided to revamp the cover, Table of Contents, Letters to the Editor, the masthead page, News Briefs and Cultural Buzz.

 GRAPHICS

I've done a few graphic illustations in my tenure on the ODYSSEY staff. I use a variety of different applications and websites to make graphics. For “Native”, I had to create a wall of sports teams’ names and then place their mascots over the text. It was not published but it was designed for Vol. 12 Issue 2. “How to become a foreign exchange student” was made using eas.ly and was featured in Vol. 12 Issue 2.

 iliad LAYOUTS

I was on the the staff of the iliad Literary Art Magazine my sophomore year. I not only contributed my photography and writing to the magazine but designed a few layouts. Right is one choice spread I designed.

 HELIUM MAG

I attended the 2014 Columbia Scholastic Press Association summer workshop in New York. There, I took a design class where I learned new  design concepts and trends. My final project for the class was Helium Magazine. While I was responsible for the design of the magazine, I wasn’t responsibile for the writing. I also presented my layouts and new design skills to my edboard during the ODYSSEY summer workshop.

 OFF-CAMPUS LEARNING

Off-campus learning was the first article of mine that was published in the magazine. Aside from having to write the article, I was also in charge of working on the layout of the story. I was assigned to create a collage of pictures of various students on field trips. I had to work really hard to finish this piece’s layout. It was the first time I ever used InDesign and it took me three days to draft the layout.

 SPOTLIGHT

I guided the Print Variety Editor, Lucia Bermudez, in creating a dynamic music layout for the upcoming Vol. 13, Issue 3. I helped her set up the photo and text layout and taught her how to create a gradient on her images.
